How to Increase your Site Rankings by Maximizing your Crawl Rate


The success of your website largely depends on your search engine rankings, which is the result of Google crawling your site. Google’s ‘GoogleBot’ crawler visits all the sites daily, checks them thoroughly before adding them to its index. Now the only way you can ensure traffic and sales from your website, is to have a higher ranking; to rank higher, your site has to get crawled regularly; and the best way to make that happen is to create new content, increase your sites speed, etc.

But, there is no way for you to ascertain as to when Google crawler will crawl your website. We have come up with some tips which will help your site to get crawled often and get your content to appear in the search results.

  1. Check your crawl stats

Before you begin, you should check your stats using Google’s Webmaster Tools to get an idea as to how often your site is being crawled. Once your site is set up in the Webmaster Tools, click on Crawl Status that will appear in the left hand menu. The data displayed is for the last 90 days and it will give you information on the number of times it has crawled your site, the highest number of crawls and the lowest number of crawls in a day.

If the size of your site is big, with enormous content and data, Google will crawl it more often. The size of the site plays a very important role in determining the number of crawls per day. So when you list more items on your site, update it or add more content, your site will automatically get crawled more on those days.

  1. Create content

Once you have a fair idea on the number of crawls, there are certain factors which will help you in increasing that ratio. When you create more content, Google will crawl your site. Make sure to regularly update and add more content, otherwise the time period between each crawl will tend to increase. Everytime Google crawls your site, there should be something new you have to offer. Add in Blogs, Articles, Informative write-ups, etc. on your site to increase your content.

  1. Get rid of Duplicate content

This issue is common in large sites or sites that have many pages. Google crawls a lot of sites each day and every time it finds duplicate content, it is surely going to drop the sites which display them. So ensure you have original as well as quality content displayed on your site.

  1. Increase site’s loading speed

Your site has more chance of getting crawled often if the pages on your site load faster and there are no or less server errors. You can look up the site errors at Webmaster Tools and make the necessary changes and optimize your website. Google will visit your site less if the crawler comes across a slow loading site.

  1. Site map

By giving a layout of your website to Google’s crawler, you make it easier for them to crawl the site and influence them to re-crawl your site more often. Though updating your site map frequently may not be a big influencing factor but is surely a deciding factor. So, if you do not have a site map in your website, now is the time to create one.

  1. Internal Links

If your site does not have internal links, the crawler will not be able to crawl those pages. The crawler will only crawl those links that are available for it to crawl. Make sure the internal pages appear on your site map.

  1. Regularly update your site

Over the course of time, you will update your pages, increase your content and add new items on your website. It is important that all these changes are updated on your site map so that they get crawled. If there are any old pages which are not in use or have been broken, remove them out so that the crawler does not waste its time on your site.

  1. Block irrelevant pages

There will pages which contain theme folders, checkout page, cart, wp-admin, etc. which do not need to appear in the search engine result. By blocking such pages, you will not waste your crawler’s precious time and there are sure to come back to your site sooner than you expect. 

  1. Broken Links

Remove all the broken links from your website or make sure they redirect the user to another link. It is always helpful if you remove the page altogether. This process should also be maintained for internal links as it will save a lot of time.

  1. Display your best

The links that your display on your home page should be viable to your visitors as well as the crawler. Unnecessary and clustered pages is just going to increase the number of pages the crawler has to crawl. This will not only affect the number of times your site gets crawled but also the bounce rate of your site. By displaying lesser but useful links, you will get a better crawl rate.
